Omar Belani meets with the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara

Algiers, January 20, 2022 (SPS) - The Special Envoy of Algeria for Western Sahara and the Maghreb, Omar Belani, met yesterday with Staffan de Mistura, Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Western Sahara, who is visiting Algeria to conclude his first tour of the region since being appointed in October 2021.

According to a statement made by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belani reaffirmed to De Mistura "Algeria's principled position, both as regards the underlying issue and its general aspects, focusing mainly on the need for direct negotiations. , in good faith and without prior conditions between the two parties to the conflict (the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco), as indicated by the relevant resolutions of the Security Council”.

In the same context, the statement recalls that "the Heads of State and Government of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) called on March 9, 2021, the two member States of the AU, Morocco and the Republic Sahrawi Arab Democratic Party, to enter into direct and frank negotiations without preconditions, in accordance with Article 4 of the Constitutive Charter of the African Union".

On the other hand, Mr. Omar Belani emphasized "the need for any United Nations peace process to take into account the urgent need for the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination, highlighting the importance of activating and re-establishing the Joint Settlement Plan of 1991 (United Nations - Organization for African Unity), as it is the only agreement accepted by the two parties to the conflict and ratified by the Security Council on two occasions”.
