Denmark supports the Saharawi people right to Self-determination

Copenhagen (Denmark) March 19, 2016 – Saharawi delegation, led by the Saharawi Minister of Cooperation, Mr. Bulahi Sid accompanied by the Polisario Front Representative in Denmark, Mr. Abba Malainin, met with officials from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Humanitarian Department (DANIDA), the Foreign affairs Committee of the Parliament, Political parties, various Organisations and media as part of a two day working visit to Denmark.

 

During the meeting in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Danish officials reaffirmed Denmark’s support to the UN efforts to find a peaceful solution for the issue of Western Sahara taking into account the right of the people of Western Sahara to Self-determination through UN referendum, supports the MINURSO Mandate to monitor human rights in Western Sahara., discourages the Danish public institutions to not invest in Western Sahara and that officially Denmark is not taking part in Crans Montana Forum 2016.

 

Mr. Bulahi Sid briefed all his interlocutors about the latest developments related to the issue of Western Sahara including the importance of the latest visit of the UN SG to North Africa region with the aim to push forward the UN efforts to find peaceful solution to the issue of Western Sahara in conformity with the international legality.

 

 The Saharawi Minister highlighted the obstacles put by Morocco to hinder the UN process in Western Sahara, the ongoing systematic violations of human rights committed by Moroccan occupation in the territory, the situation of the Saharawi political activists who are on hunger strike in different prisons in Morocco, the situation of the illegal plundering of natural resources of the occupied territory and the humanitarian situation of the Saharawi refugees.

 

The Saharawi official in all the meetings emphasized that the international community including Denmark should contribute more to rescue the threatened UN peace process more than any time before in Western Sahara in order that the Saharawi people can choose their future freely by exercising their right to Self-determination through UN supervised referendum.
